How to plan a fuel stop on a journey

To plan a fuel stop, start with your range and route, find an accessible station with the right fuel, then check opening hours and keep a backup option. Price is part of the decision, alongside the detour required.

Start with a range margin

Before leaving, estimate whether your current fuel can get you to the planned stop with a margin. The range shown by your vehicle is still an estimate: traffic, terrain and driving conditions can change consumption.

Do not let the search for a lower price force you to reach a station that is too far away. Plan an early enough stop to preserve other options along your route.

Find an accessible station

A station close to your route on a map is not necessarily easy to reach. Check the direction of traffic, the required exit and the extra distance needed to return to your route.

In Fillzz, select your fuel, compare relevant stations and open the details of the one you are considering. The aim is to choose a stop that fits your journey, rather than only the lowest price across a large area.

Check useful details

  • Is the fuel offered compatible with your vehicle?
  • Do the listed opening hours match your expected arrival?
  • Do available services meet your needs?
  • Does the price have a recent update time?
  • Is the detour reasonable for your fill-up volume?

Fillzz refreshes data every 10 minutes. Its availability and freshness depend on the information supplied by data providers. If a condition is essential, confirm it with the station. Check the price displayed at the pump before refuelling.

Keep a backup option

Identify a second reasonably accessible station in case the first stop no longer works. This does not have to be a second stop saved in the app: simply knowing another option prevents you from relying on a single station.

When crossing a border, check Fillzz coverage, fuel names and units. Compare prices in the same currency and for the same volume.

Set up navigation before driving

Once you have chosen a stop, start guidance while parked. Fillzz includes GPS navigation and includes CarPlay and Android Auto in Fillzz Premium, on compatible equipment.

A passenger can help reassess the stop. If you need to change the search or settings yourself, park somewhere appropriate first.

A decision example

You plan to buy 40 litres and one station is €0.10/L cheaper than another: the gross saving is €4. If reaching it requires a detour, calculate its cost, then consider any extra fees and the time you are willing to spend.

This example uses hypothetical values. The guide describes a planning method; it does not guarantee a price, station opening or vehicle range.
